7/12 Isaiah 59 - The Depth of Our Sin and Greatness of God's Grace
If we ever think sin is no big deal, we haven't read Isaiah 59. This chapter shows us that the problem of our sin is SO serious we cannot solve it on our own! We need the Lord and His amazing grace! Join us for another key study in a key chapter of God's Word!
STUDY & DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1. Today we look at a chapter that contains an important truth about the damage our sin causes in our relationship with God. How would you define “sin”? How serious do you think it is? Why?
2. A key question everyone must answer is: “How can a Holy God have fellowship with a sinful person?” How would you answer that question? People tend to answer this question in a way that lower God’s standards and raises man’s goodness. Why is that a problem?
3. Verse 1 starts with the omniscience and omnipotence of God and lets the people know that if God does not act, there is a reason. So, in verse 1, what limitations does God have?
4. In verse 2, what does the word “iniquity” mean? According to this verse, what do iniquities do to a person’s relationship with God? What does it mean that God does not hear?
5. Read Psalm 66:18 and Proverbs 28:9. What do these verses say about the person who intently focuses on things the Lord deems as sin? How does sin impact their prayers? How are these verses saying the same truth that we see here in Isaiah 59:2?
6. In verse 3, what are the kinds of sins were the people engage in? What might a modern-day version of these sins look like?
7. In verse 4, how do people reply upon trickery and bending the justice system for their own gain? How is this similar to the way society tends to operate today?
8. What is the outcome of their sinful ways in verses 6 & 7? What kind of culture was being produced by their sinful ways? Is there any of these kinds of traits in your culture?
9. In verse 8, why does the way of peace escape those who pursue sin? Have you ever seen this principle bear out in the life of someone you know?
10. How would you say that verses 9 – 11 characterize their society? Do these people sound happy and joyful in their sin? How might this describe many places in our world today?
11. In verses 12 to 14, what is does an honest assessment of their situation conclude? Is it possible to know the damage our sin causes, but not care enough to change?
12. How does the Lord respond to their sin in verses 15 to 18? What does He do to save His people? Why does it require the Lord to save His people from their sins?
13. How does God respond to those who fear His name? How is He their redeemer?
14. In verse 21, what is the covenant that the Lord is offering to His people? When was this inaugurated? What role and responsibility do we have to bring the message of this covenant to the world?
