Addictions
There is no living creature on earth as complex, as gifted, or as intelligent as man. Our immortal spirits are eternal. God is the father of our spirits. We are eternal beings. We came from eternity, and we will return to eternity. We were born of divinity and divinity is our heritage. Peter says.
1 Simon Peter, a servant, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Let’s review the words of Peter, the chief apostle of our Lord. He said the following
· to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ.
The first step to overcoming addiction is faith. Faith in God, Faith in self, and faith in others are the three levels of faith, Faith in God being the first and greatest. The others in their turn. But all levels of faith are essential in overcome addictions or bad habits or undesirable behavior.
· Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of “God, and of Jesus our Lord
The second step is to acquire knowledge of God, speaking of the Father, and knowledge of Jesus our Lord, speaking of the Son. It was the Son who said.
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)
That is one of the greatest insights on how to gain freedom. Truth is the only key to freedom. Truth is bound in law, temporal law and spiritual law. All laws are of God. We look to science to teach us temporal law. We look to our prophets and apostles to teach us spiritual law. As seen above, the second step is to acquire knowledge of spiritual law (or knowledge of God.”
The third step is to acquire knowledge of temporal law. Truth and law are synonymous. Let me repeat. All laws are of God and to him all things, even temporal law, are spiritual. Our spirit is subject to spiritual law. Our physical bodies are subject to temporal law. Therefore, in this life, to be free we must understand both spiritual law and temporal law.
Peter speaks of the “lusts of the flesh.” This could also apply to addictions of the flesh. Clearly one step we must take in freeing ourselves from addiction is knowledge. Knowledge of God. Knowledge of Law. That way we can combine faith and science. All truth comes from God, whether truth of temporal law or truth of spiritual law.
· His divine power has given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness
Without the divine power given unto all things that pertain unto life and godliness, it is almost impossible to overcome strong addiction. That is why Steps 1 and 2 are so important from the onset. We need to know who we really are. What separates us from the flora and fauna or all other life forms. Science likes to compare us to animals, and, naturally, we share with animals a physical body, but we are not animals. We are children of God and were sent to earth to become more Christlike.
