Chequered Flag - Ep 04 - Racing Legends - Johnny Lewis
In this #chequeredflag episode, Gordon May speaks to star American Flat Track racer, Johnny Lewis. He is joined by Adrian Sellers, who heads up Royal Enfield’s custom programme.
Not since the heady days of the 1950s and 1960s, with Redditch-based trials winners such as Peter Stirland, Peter Gaunt and Johnny Brittain, or the 1970s and 1980s with multiple Indian Grand Prix winner, Bullet Bose, has Royal Enfield had a successful works entry in any form of motorsport. That changed in dramatic fashion on October 17th 2020 when Johnny Lewis won the Progressive American Flat Track Production Twins season finale at Daytona Beach.
Based at Centre Hill, Florida, Johnny has enjoyed a long and successful career in motorcycle racing. He recalls his first experiences riding the Royal Enfield FT 650 Twin, the subsequent challenges and the successes, and gives a riveting insight into what makes him such a competitive racer.
As well as heading up Royal Enfield’s custom programme, Adrian Sellers was instrumental in taking the brand flat track racing. His insights into why and how this happened, along with an account of the FT 650 Twin’s development, is fascinating.
