Bowerman Track Club's Thomas Ratcliffe Talks About Running 4:01 (Mile) in High School, Stanford Years, Dealing With Injuries, And More!
In episode fifty-seven of The Running Effect, I speak with Thomas Ratcliffe. In high school, Thomas was a phenomenal athlete. Some of the most notable accomplishments were a handful of state titles and running 4:01 in the mile (a Massachusetts state record). Not only did he excel in running, but also in soccer where he led his team to a state title. To my knowledge, he's the only boy to win a soccer state championship in the Fall and then run 4:01 in the mile the following Spring.
Thomas then went on to a successful career at Stanford. As a freshman, Thomas was named the PAC-12 Freshman of the Year. The few following seasons were spent rehabbing some serious injuries. After recovering from those, Thomas placed third at NCAAs in 2019 in the 5k. The following year, Thomas transferred to the University of North Carolina where he finished out his NCAA eligibility.
Following the NCAA outdoor championships last summer, Thomas signed with Nike and The Bowerman Track Club! He is currently a member of the team training for some big upcoming races in the next few months.
In this episode, we do a deep dive into Thomas's career from high school all the way up to the present day. We go through the ups, downs, and everything in-between! It was a pleasure getting to know Thomas and hear his story. I can't wait to see what this year has in store for him!
