Matt discusses the history of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state that existed in China from 1851-1864. The rebellion was organized around the landless Hakka people by Hong Xiuquan who, after failing his bureaucratic entrance exams, had a nervous breakdown that led him to believe he was the brother of Jesus Christ. Matt tracks the rise and fall of the kingdom, and how it fits in other proto-socialist movements, and the resonances with the Mormon history he laid out on the last two episodes of the Inebriated Past.
