Season 3 Podcast 154 Natural Laws vs Spiritual Laws Pt II
Natural Laws vs Spiritual Laws Pt II
In Part I of Natural Laws vs Spiritual Laws, we discussed the effects of ignoring the laws of God. In Part II, we continue our definition of the distinction between natural law and spiritual law. It is easy for us to see the effects of natural law. Our scientists are quick to point out the principle of causality. No nation can prosper that does not encourage the advancement of science. However, the fastest way to destroy democracy is to rely entirely upon natural law and ignore spiritual law. Natural law gives us freedom, but spiritual law alone gives us freewill, agency, and liberty.
“15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.” (Matthew 13:15-16)
It is not God who hardens their heart, stops up their ears, and closes their eyes. It is they themselves. It is willful blindness. The Lord blesses all those who see and hear. God protects agency even when it leads to our own destruction. Those who do not understand the importance of agency do not understand God. If God interfered with our agency, it would undo everything he stands for.
Natural law merely hands you from one law to another as you traverse or reverse your own course. Natural laws give you freedom based on knowledge and wisdom, but only spiritual laws give you agency. Freewill is spiritual, not temporal. The reason we have freewill is because we have an immortal spirit and immortal intelligence. Without conditions in natural law, we would be cogs in a machine without freedom. Those who use tobacco subject themselves to certain genetic propensities; those who quit using tobacco are often allowed to stop the future consequences of tobacco smoke, but they are not allowed to change the laws of nature or reverse damage already incurred unless the power preexists in the body. They are still subject to genetic propensities. But the same genetic propensities that were leading toward cancer or heart disease while they smoked, often lead toward restoring health, if they are fortunate, after they quit. The great contribution of science has been in discovering natural laws. The great contribution of prophets has been in revealing spiritual laws. Through faith God has power to heal the body that appears to supersede natural laws. Such acts are called miracles, and Christians believe in miracles. It must be understood, however, that God never violates law neither natural nor spiritual; however, as Isaiah tells us—
‘his ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts, for as the heavens are higher than the earth so are his thoughts higher than our thoughts and his ways higher than our ways.’ (See Isaiah 55:8-9)
God is omniscient and omnipotent. Perfect knowledge gives him perfect power.
Fortunate indeed is the individual who understands and respects the laws of nature, for they cannot be disobeyed, but more fortunate is he who understands and obeys the laws of God, for they should not be disobeyed. One is greatly blessed who understands and obeys natural law for the mortal earth is theirs. One is doubly blessed who understands and obeys spiritual law for heaven and immortality with God are theirs. But those who know, understand, and obey both natural law and spiritual law are heirs of earth and heaven and comprehend fully the law that the truth shall make you free. Education that makes us temporally knowledgeable but spiritually ignorant creates a false sense of security.
