It happened to me: I was scammed by a literary agent, and by a so-called publisher. Not once, but twice. Shame on me, right? But as writers, we so badly want our publishing dreams to come true that authors are willing to overlook the alarm bells that poften go off in our gut when we are confronted by a scam. Whether it's for publishing services or via literary contests, scams abound in the publishing industry. The main reason they are so pervasive: some writers are not as knowledgable as they could be about the writing, editing, and publishing process.
