Matthew 2: 8-13 provides an important background to this sermon. A dominant narrative in christianity, especially the Seventh Day Adventist Church, is that there is spiritual conflict. We call it the Great Controversy and it's a spiritual walk, so the question is "Am I spiritually competent, do I have what it requires to fight and take part in this great controversy?" This battle is not physical, for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against authorities, against cosmic powers over this present darkness and against the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places.
