Ep. 47 - They Were All in Love with Songs w/ Tamara Saviano
Our guest this week is Tamara Saviano, author, journalist, publicist and Grammy-nominated record producer, who is releasing this spring her documentary about Guy and Susanna Clark called "Without Getting Killed or Caught." Saviano, a long-time friend and collaborator with the Clarks has made a wonderful film that tells the story how Clark and his contemporaries like Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle and others created an influential songwriting community in Nashville and in Texas in the 1970's. But of greater importance, Saviano's film brings to the fore and highlights Susanna Clark, an accomplished songwriter and artist in her own right. The documentary stars Academy-Award winning actor Sissy Spacek, who gives voice to Susanna throughout the film. We also discussed some challenges making the a documentary such as this and releasing one during a worldwide pandemic. This will be a must-see film for us at Hooks & Runs -- click on the links above for more information.
Chapter 2 - Hall of Famer Hank Aaron passed away last week at age 86. We look back on his legendary career and amazing life, including his chase for the record-breaking 715th career home run that spanned from the final games in 1973 to the first week in the 1974 season. Aaron faced and overcame not only intense publicity generated by the elongated home run chase, but also racially motivated attacks and death threats. Co-host Craig was a pre-teen in these years and talks about his memories living through that exciting time. It's been a rough stretch for baseball fans -- ten Hall of Fame players have passed away since April 2020, including two former Astros - Joe Morgan and Don Sutton. Losing Hank Aaron really hurts.
Chapter 3 - The baseball hot stove is heating up as the Cactus and Grapefruit League seasons are around the corner. We examine George Springer's contract with Toronto and how other free agents who signed $100 million contracts after turning 31 have fared. It isn't pretty. Eric and Craig also discuss Kirby Yates to Toronto, Michael Brantley to Toronto, no wait, back to Houston, The Jameson Taillon trade from Pittsburgh to the Yankees and Brad Hand signing with Washington for more money that Washington would have had to pay Hand had they just claimed him off waivers back in November. Baseball signings and trades are just getting started - this will be a regular feature 'til Opening Day.
