It's possibly the most iconic conspiracy theory, it’s one of the originals. The Illuminati are believed to be a shadowy organisation of wealthy, powerful people (or giant shape shifting lizards, depending who you talk to) who control all the world’s governments, industries and banks.

You’ve probably at least heard of it. But you might be surprised to know the Illuminati was a real secret society started by a German law professor in the 1770s who maybe got a little carried away smoking joints in the forest with four of his students. Jacob shares the story with our fabulous producer, Lindsey Green.
