Vélo Canada Bikes' Pedal Poll results for Edmonton have been released. The data comes from week-long counts throughout Edmonton done in June last year.
Paths for People volunteers reviewed the results and found that the people who are biking about DO NOT reflect the diversity of Edmontonians.
Paths for People noted there are limitations to counts based on observation, but the data shows that over 70% of the cyclists observed were perceived to be white. The remaining 30% comprised East Asian, Indigenous, South Asian, Black, Latino and Middle Eastern peoples.
As well, 75% of cyclists were adults, 11% were seniors and 10% were children. A whopping 66% of observed cyclists were perceived to be male.
Observational counts of this nature inform researchers and governments about access to cycling infrastructure for Edmontonians of all ages, abilities, and populations. When there are more places to ride, more people ride, and infrastructure helps them feel safe in making that choice.
