EP 125: Marcio Zouvi - The genesis of Sharp Eye Surfboards, Shaping boards for the world’s best surfers, Filipe Toledo’s title-winning quad, Managing the best team on Earth, The importance of competition, and Stories from a career as a top shaper
Sharp Eye Surfboards founder and shaper Marcio Zouvi joins The Lineup to talk about building boards for the best surfers in the world. He discusses the recent Rip Curl WSL Finals, working with Filipe Toledo over the years to dial in the perfect Trestles surfboard, watching Filipe win the World Title on the Sharp Eye quad, and the impact on his business since. He looks back at his personal journey to becoming one of the top shapers in the sport, growing up in Rio de Janeiro, learning to surf at Copacabana beach, attempting to shape his first board at age 12, moving to San Diego to learn his craft and work his way up through the ranks, and finally creating his own brand. He breaks down the evolution of technology over the last 30 years, incorporating concaves in the designs, CNC machines, and how he started to work with Championship Tour athletes. Finally, he dives into the details of shaping for the world’s best, creating 10 to 20 boards for every stop on tour, assembling and managing the most impressive team on the planet, traveling to events, the importance of competition, and seeing how far his equipment can be pushed.
