10/3: The death toll from Hurricane Ian continues to rise. Seven Americans freed in prisoner swap with Venezuela.
Hurricane Ian's aftermath brings yet more heartbreak as the death toll continues to rise and questions grow about how evacuations were handled. The number of confirmed deaths has risen to 86 in the U.S. The vast majority in Florida. More than 630,000 people are still without power. That number will hopefully continue to fall, as recovery work progresses. Russian troops have been driven out of another important city in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces recaptured Leeman, a major crossroads in eastern Ukraine over the weekend. Russia is responding with more long-range attacks that have killed civilians. The Supreme Court opens a new term today with Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson making history and four female justices now serving on the court. The justices will be taking on more significant cases after its historic decision in June to overturn Roe v. Wade. The justices will hear arguments tomorrow in a voting rights case from Alabama. Later this month, they'll consider a challenge to college admissions programs that use race to ensure diversity. President Biden is praising a controversial prisoner swap with Venezuela over the weekend. After months of negotiations, seven Americans were exchanged for two convicted drug smugglers who have ties to Venezuela's ruler. Police in California are now investigating multiple murders in the city of Stockton, as the work of a possible serial killer. They say the crimes all happened within the last few months, in the same part of the city. There are no suspects but investigators have released an image of a person they are calling a person of interest. This morning, the soccer world is mourning 125 fans who died in a stadium stampede in Indonesia. It happened at the end of a game on Saturday, after some people ran onto the field. Officials say 32 of the dead are children. A government minister says families of those who died will be compensated. Witnesses say the police response led to the disaster.
