It was written in November–December 1931. The story was rejected by Weird Tales editor Farnsworth Wright when August Derleth surreptitiously submitted it for publication in 1933. In late 1935, William L. Crawford's Visionary Publishing Company began the process of issuing The Shadow over Innsmouth as a book. The project came to fruition in November 1936.
