The Washington Capitals beat the Blue Jackets in the final preseason game. Cuts to the roster on Sunday
In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals game Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Capitals defeated the Blue Jackets by a score of 4-3. The game saw goals by Dylan Strome, Alex Ovechkin, Anthony Mantha and Nic Dowd. Darcy Kuemper made 36 saves on 39 shots.
In the preseason finale on Saturday, both groups got plenty of work as the Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets logged a combined eight penalties in Washington’s 4-3 overtime victory. The Capitals went 1-for-4 in their power play opportunities, scoring on an Ovechkin one-timer in the final minute of the first period.
Later in the show Dan talks about the cuts to the roster Sunday. Lucas Johansen, along with Henrik Borgstrom, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby and Brett Leason, went on waivers after practice. If he clears, he will head to the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
“[I tell them] my office privately. I don’t take it lightly,” Laviolette said. “For a guy who was sent down every year, I understand exactly what they’re going through. Sometimes you don’t understand but I do. And the conversations are real. Emotions are real. I understand that and nowadays, for the most part, everybody works really hard to try and attain their goal. When you’re close, it’s you can feel that. It’s real.”
Aliaksei Protas and Joe Snively appear to have made the cut, though Laviolette said it is still camp and that nothing is permanent. Therefore, he hasn’t touched base with them on cracking the 23-man opening night roster, which is due on Monday at 5 p.m.
