Round 18 - The F1 Japanese Grand Prix Review 2022
On this week’s Cut to the Race Podcast, James is joined by Abby and Grace for their review of the Japanese Grand Prix.
Formula One headed to Suzuka for the Japanese Grand Prix, which was a race of two halves with a red flag session in between. With a lot to unpack, the panel discuss the events leading up to Max Verstappen being crowned World Champion of 2022.
With mixed conditions in the free practice sessions, the weekend was looking to be quite the show with the focus on Pierre Gasly and Nyck de Vries, who have confirmed F1 seats for 2023. The trio talk about their moves before diving into Qualifying, which saw some unexpected performances from the likes of Sebastian Vettel and some close calls for Charles Leclerc.
The topic of conversation then moved on to the Grand Prix. The panel talk about the opening lap chaos that saw Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon retire, and a very close call for Vettel, before dissecting the incident regarding Gasly and a tractor being on track. After sharing their own views and those of other drivers, the trio then review the 40-minute-or-so Grand Prix that many on-track battles, a championship-deciding penalty and the confusion, from the media and Verstappen himself, over whether he was champion.
