11. Discipline is Destiny - Lou Gehrig, Hard Work, & Living Your Life
This episode recaps Ryan Holiday's, Discipline is Destiny, Chapter 1 where he describes New York Yankees' first baseman, Lou Gehrig. I felt so inspired, so moved after reading this chapter that I wanted, I NEEDED to share his story. From humble beginnings, to being known as the Iron Horse, Lou teaches us how to work hard, live with integrity, stay disciplined, and strive to be the best in whatever we wish to pursue.
In this episode, I could have gone on and on about all of Gehrig’s records, batting titles, Triple Crowns, and MVP’s, but what I really wanted to share with you all is the inspiration I took away about maximizing this life we have been gifted.
Lou played in the Major Leagues for 17 years - dedicating his time, his life, his discipline, and his daily decisions to this game that he loved. And all of a sudden, one day, completely out of control, he slowly began losing it all. Until the day he ended his OWN streak of 2,130 consecutive games played, and pulled himself out of the lineup, because the onset of ALS had begun.
His swing slowed. He fell putting on his pants. He struggled to put on his glove. Slowly and surely he started losing his motor functions, and it was just 2 years later that Lou Gehrig passed away at the young, ripe age of 38.
This story inspired me to reflect - to think about how we need to go LIVE OUR LIVES. Now! Before life is gone, and there’s nothing we can do about it, because it can literally be taken away at any given moment. Go do the things you love. And keep doing them. Whether that’s your career, your job, or even just something on the side - go do that thing and keep doing it. Do the things YOU feel you were born to do.
If you found any value in listening to this episode, or even just reading this, can you please do me a huge favor and please leave a 5 star rating and review? It is appreciated more than you'll ever know.
