In 1986, the United Way of Cleveland launched nearly 1.5 million balloons to set a new world record and call attention to its annual fundraising campaign. It was beautiful for a few minutes, but then a stormfront caused the inflated balloons to fall, causing car accidents, closing an airport runway, spooking horses, and hindering the Coast Guard's effort to find two missing fishermen.
