Dementia, Not Just For Old Folk | Kate Swaffer - 454
It's fair to say when the vast majority of us hear the word Dementia, we are likely to bring to mind heads of grey and faces deeply etched from lives long and well lived. So, as you can imagine, I was taken aback when today's guest Kate Swaffer shared with me that she experienced her first symptoms at the spritely age of 35 and was diagnosed with Younger Onset Dementia at 49.
This conversation brought to light just how very far we have fallen short as a society when it comes to supporting those who experience this progressively debilitating condition. Sure, supporting families and loved ones through their own inevitable experience of grief and loss is crucial. But Kate's experience was likened to being told to go home, take care of her affairs and get ready to die. Ouch... do better us.
Who is Kate, anyway? She's an advocate, an author and a speaker who is taking Dementia by the you-know-what's and making sure that she continues a life well lived whilst creating some much-needed ripple effects for those young and not-so-young whose paths Dementia has crossed.
