Not all strength training is the same; lifting a barbell is different than swinging a kettlebell and using a set of dumbbells provides a completely different workout than using a machine. To make sure that you are doing the best exercises and workouts for your goals, you should first have an understanding of how the human body is designed to move and the different ways that it can be challenged with exercise.
Kevin Carr is a Boston-based performance coach, educator, massage therapist, author and a co-creator of the Functional Strength Coach Certification that teaches how to design strength-training programs for the way the body is designed to move. Coach Carr works with Coach Mike Boyle, the founder of Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, a facility that helps individuals from professional athletes to septuagenarian grandmothers improve their ability to perform their favorite activities (Coach Boyle has helped the Boston Red Sox and Boston University Men's Hockey win the World Series and National Championship, so they know what they're doing) and that has been recognized by Men's Health as one of the top gyms in the U.S.
Kevin is also the co-author of Functional Strength Training Anatomy, a book that explains how to strengthen your body by using the muscle the way they are designed to work. On this episode, Kevin talks about the difference between bodybuilding and performance training and why you should be doing the latter instead of the former. In addition, he shares how some of your muscles actually function (not the way you think) and the types of exercises that you should be doing to help them become stronger so that you can perform your best. It's all about how to improve your ability to move on this episode of All About Fitness.
