The Law of Equality Pt 2
As an introduction to this podcast, please first listen to Podcast 220, “The Law of Equality Pt 1.”
To fully understand freedom, we must distinguish among the five terms: freewill, agency, freedom, liberty, and equality. They are often used as synonyms; however, for teaching purposes, I need to draw a clear distinction.
There is only one savior and redeemer of the world and that is Jesus Christ. Only because of Christ will we be resurrected. Only because of Christ can we be saved. If God did not give everyone a chance to accept Christ, whether on earth or in the world of the spirits of the dead he would be a respecter of persons.
Agency is a delicate balance. On the one hand, the ability to choose between good and evil is necessary for agency. On the other hand, society must be able to protect itself against evil people. Agency is related to our knowledge of good and evil. Freedom is related to choices. We have temporal laws; therefore, we have temporal choices. We have spiritual laws; therefore, we have spiritual choices.
Some temporal choices are marginally relevant. Should I drive a Ford or a Chevy? Some temporal choices have life-changing consequences. Should I take drugs or not take drugs. There is overlap because many temporal choices have lasting spiritual consequences. We often think of temporal choices as dealing with good, better, and best. Spiritual choices deal with good and evil, right and wrong, moral and immoral, God and Satan, heaven and hell. The laws contained in the Holy Scriptures deal primarily with spiritual laws or the laws of God called the Commandments of God.
Only God can determine good and evil, moral and immoral. Agency depends upon spiritual law, primarily knowledge of good and evil. Freedom depends upon temporal law, primarily upon the laws of nature or what we generally call natural law. Liberty depends upon manmade laws or laws of government. A democratic republic depends upon a perfect balance of temporal law and spiritual law. God alone, not government, has the power to create equality. Any attempt by government to create equality will fail. It will result in blatant, divisive, and destructive inequality and promote racism.
God alone, who is no respecter of persons, has the power to create perfect equality. His method is very simple. He teaches us his laws and gives us the agency to obey or disobey those laws. The father of inequality is sin and sin alone, and the father of sin is Satan. All evil in the world is the consequence of sin, either ours or someone else’s. Good people often suffer from the behavior of bad people. The primary job of government is to control the behavior of bad people. Government would be superfluous in a perfect society.
Government should stay entirely out of the business of equality. Only Christ should have that power. People must be allowed to stand or fall upon their own merits.
The three greatest lusts are lust for sexual gratification, lust for money, and lust for power. Where those lusts are not voluntarily controlled by the people, then government must establish boundaries, strictly enforced by law.
In a free nation, people have a right to be selfish. In a free nation, though, for the good of society, laws must be strictly enforced to protect liberty, people must have the right to choose between God and Satan, moral and immoral, good and evil.
In a free nation, liberty, subject to manmade laws, is an attempt by society to balance freedom and agency. How much evil should be allowed in a free society is at the core of manmade laws. America, above all nations in modern times, has been blessed because it was founded by people of all nations and religions who came here seeking religious freedom.
