Hard-seeded legumes: Farmer experience on how this pasture can fit in your cropping system
Paul Sinderberry, along with his wife and daughter, farm at "Carawatha", 50km north of Condobolin. Alongside a traditional mixed farm with wheat, canola and pulse cropping, they also run commercial and stud Angus cattle herds.
In today's episode, Paul explains how their stud cattle operation, "Moogenilla Angus", led to their investigation and trailing of hard-seeded legumes in their pasture system. He shares how the low-bloating nature of hard-seeded legumes like biserrula and serradella was enticing to Paul, after losing expensive stud animals on bloating legume pasture, like lucerne and clover. Finally, Paul shares some useful tips for anyone considering growing hard-seeded legumes on their own farm.
Local Land Services Mixed Farming Advisor, Rohan Leach, joined Paul on the lounge at Carawatha over a cuppa and a toasted sandwich to bring you this great chat.
