Moment of Meditation: New Covenant (Genesis 9:8-11)
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, and with every living creature that is with you … never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” Genesis 9:8-11
An old Gospel song comes to mind whenever I hear these words. The chorus goes: “It’s gonna rain, it’s gonna rain you better get ready you better get right God showed Noah the rainbow sign it won’t be water but fire next time.”
God established His covenant with Noah and all the animals that survived the Flood: “Never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” He never promises that He will not destroy the earth again. He simply says He won’t use water. But He promises us a “new heavens and a new earth” (Isaiah 65:17) where we will live with Him forever. What will happen to the old heavens and earth?
God says through Isaiah, “For behold, the LORD will come in fire, and his chariots like the whirlwind, to render his anger in fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire” (Isaiah 66:15). Paul reminds us that everything in our lives will be tested with fire. The good will survive, but the evil will perish (1 Corinthians 3:12-15). Amen.
