Moment of Meditation: Rainbow (Genesis 9:12-13)
And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Genesis 9:12-13
Rainbows are welcome sights after a heavy storm. They are a beautiful reminder of God’s mercy. Every time it rains, we have the opportunity to remember God’s mercy for every living creature.
Why does God give us constant reminders? Because we are very forgetful humans. We forget things so quickly. We need the reminders.
This is why the Church structures the year around the major events in Jesus’ life and ministry. The beginning of our year is the season of Advent. The joyful anticipation of Christmas and the celebration of Jesus’ birth. We then move quickly toward the reason for His birth: His death on the cross for the forgiveness of the sin of the world. Good Friday and Easter are the central event in all of human history. We repeat the cycle every year so that it is always before us.
The repetition of the reminders bring us a solid foundation to build our lives upon. The solid foundation of God’s promise of mercy for all who fear, love, and trust in Him above all things. Amen.
