Season 3 Podcast 251 “A Christmas Message Pt I.”
We have talked about the many titles of Christ. If you Google it, some scholars will list a 1000 names for Christ. Some names, of course, are more well-known than others: Savior, Redeemer, Only Begotten Son, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Holy One of Israel. Creator, Prince of Peace, Immanuel, Advocate, Author and Finisher of our Faith, The Good Shepherd, Fountain of Living Waters, Messiah, Chief Cornerstone, the Lamb of God, The Bright and Morning Star, The Way, the Truth, and the Life, Alpha and Omega, the Resurrection and the Life.
It is fruitful to meditate upon his titles for they give us insight into the attributes of Christ. One cannot really pick best titles for all are important, but if He didn’t carry the titles of Savior and Redeemer, we would all be lost. And if he did not hold the title Lamb of God, he could not have saved us from the law of justice. Christ had to voluntarily sacrifice his life for our sins. And if he did not hold the title, The Resurrection and the Life, our bodies would never rise from the dead.
I like the titles King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I have often asked myself what kings is he king of and what Lords is he Lord of? At first, I thought he was talking about earthly nobility, but that is not possible. He cared nothing for earthly rank. The nobles he knew sought to bring about his death.
He is talking about his heavenly kingdom. Those who inherit his Kingdom become Kings and Lords. Those are the only titles he acknowledges. Speaking to those who were trying to stone him he said,
32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? (John 10:31-36)
John the Revelator records
5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, 6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Notice the titles that John gives to Christ: “Jesus Christ,” “the faithful witness, “the first begotten of the dead,” and “the prince of the kings of the earth.” Especially at Christmas we like to celebrate the birth of Christ. We have so many inspiring and glorious songs: “Away in a Manger,” “O Holy Night,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “The First Noel,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Silent Night,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Joy to the World”; and in sacred literature, of course, we have Luke’s version of the birth of Christ.
But Christ was God before he came to the earth. He did not begin his mission on earth. For the full story of Christ, we must go back into the eternities. We must view Christ as the creator.
John 1:1-5
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
