146 It's the holiday season, and maybe you picked up extra work to help a coworker, agreed to join a neighbor's event, told your family you would finish the cleaning, or volunteered to gift wrap.
Let's examine our motivation behind the things we're doing!
We shouldn't be doing as many things for people as we are doing to control others' perceptions of us. Emily discusses how the intention behind what we do for others and maintaining that is important. The motivation behind giving and serving others can be very different, even if the action is the same.
Emily's story of maintaining a clean-ish house becomes untangled when she shifts the motivation behind it. Her internal pressures on maintaining a clean home stemmed from wanting to appear productive. She expresses how we can flip the narrative, and instead of doing something to control how others view us, we do it out of love. We can clean the house because it makes us feel good. We decide to stay home with the family to be present in our children's lives and in that moment. We said no to something to make another thing a priority.
Dive into this episode with Emily as she continues this December series on people-pleasing and self-acceptance. Learn how to make love your motivation rather than what other people think of you. Untwist those narratives and discover the key to radically shifting our actions.
Before the next episode plays, listen to Emily's prompt and take a moment to reflect on one area of your life you want people to respect you. Then, ask yourself how it would look different if you just loved instead of trying to control how other people perceive you.
