Moment of Meditation: Cursed Be Canaan (Genesis 9:24-25)
When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him, he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.” Genesis 9:24-25
When Noah sobers up, he finds out what happens. Surprisingly, he doesn’t curse his son. He curses his yet-to-be-born grandson, Canaan. Canaan would become Ham’s most notorious child, as we will see next month. The curse of the father moves on to the children, as God will later reveal to Moses, “I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me” (Exodus 20:5).
Canaan would be the ancestor of the nations that God would command the Israelites to exterminate from the Promised Land. The Israelites are the children of Shem. The Canaanites would be the servants of the Israelites.
This curse would manifest itself in the multitude of abominations the Canaanites would make with their idols. They lived out the curse so that God would issue the command for their destruction.
Destruction is the result of God’s curse. Sin is cursed and will result in eternal condemnation if not covered by Christ’s blood. Amen.
