Why did QB Walker Howard decide to leave the LSU Tigers to play for Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss?
LSU quarterback Walker Howard committed to LSU knowing he would sit his first year, learn the system, run scout team, and hold a clipboard. But after that, he wanted an opportunity to compete. With starting QB Jayden Daniels returning and Garrett Nussmeier's intentions of staying in Baton Rouge, there didn't seem like much of an opportunity for Howard to see the field and compete. So last week he entered his name in the transfer portal and on Wednesday he announced his commitment to Ole Miss and head coach Lane Kiffin. Why would Howard decide to transfer to a school where the starting quarterback incumbent returns to reclaim his spot as the starter? Why go to an SEC West divisional rival? Was there anything LSU could have done differently to keep Howard's talent in purple and gold?
Plus, there was a former LSU Tiger who also decided to transfer away to a different SEC West rival. In 2021 star cornerback Eli Ricks transferred away from LSU to Alabama, even after he publicly said he did not have intentions to leave the Tigers. How is Howard's situation different? How should LSU fans feel about Howard's departure, and more importantly, his landing spot?
