Season 4 Podcast 14 “The Law of Equality Pt II”
Thank you for joining us in Pt II of The law of equality. If you have not downloaded Pt I, may we recommend that you do so. The Law of Equality is among the first laws given by God to the Israelites as they traveled to the Promised land. It was held in high esteem and was one of the primary guiding principles of the judges of the House of Israel. Our nation is modeled not after the rule of the kings of the House of Israel but after the rule of the Judges. That was the first great democracy. It would, of course be considered today as a theocracy because it was ruled by Moses, the prophet, but it was governed by Judges. Moses was the court of last resort.
Deuteronomy 1:16-17
16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
That counsel given to the House of Israel is necessary for any government that believes that we were created equal by God.
1. Judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger.
2. Ye shall not respect persons in judgment.
3. Ye shall hear the small as well as the great.
4. Ye shall not be afraid of the face of man.
How would America change today if we obeyed that counsel with exactness? Where would be the cry of racism then? Again, the Lord counseled.
Deuteronomy 16:18-19
8 Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the Lord thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment.
19 Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.
1. Judges and officers shall thou make thee in all thy gates.
2. They shalt judge the people with just judgment.
3. Thou shalt not wrest judgment.
4. Thou shalt not respect persons.
5. Thou shalt not take a gift for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.
Can you imagine a world where politicians, judges, lawyers, policemen, and all who sat in judgment were free of bribes or even the appearance of bribes? The first rule that should be strictly applied to all those in authority is they should not be permitted to take gifts of any kind or of any worth for any circumstances. The scriptures warn to avoid the appearance of evil. It should be an offence worthy of impeachment or otherwise removal from office.
To “wrest” judgment means to twist, seize, grasp, tug, pull, extort, or wring judgment. When I was a boy of ten growing up in South Carolina, we lived on a 63-acre farm way down in Cherokee County where houses were very far apart. Our clothes washer was in the yard behind the house. I watched my mother wring clothes. That is what it was called, “wringing clothes.” And sometimes I did it for her. Actually, I did it quite often. It was an electric washer. The wringer then was on top of the washer. Sometimes I had to pull and tug to get the clothes through the wringer, hence the phrase “put through the wringer.” Warm soapy water would run down my arms, and I would be exhausted when the job was done.
The Lord condemned those who put judgment through the wringer. That means you wrested judgment and pulled and tugged and twisted it to fit something it wasn’t meant to fit.
