Last week, we saw Mercia collapse in about 5 years, with multiple Mercian kings marching into East Anglia in an attempt to retake it. There are reasons why this happened the way it did, and it’s because Mercia wasn’t about to lie down and accept their demise. They had lost the south, yes, but if they could retake the financially powerful Eastern Kingdom they might be able to reassert Mercian dominance. This wasn’t the first time that a Mercian Hegemony had crashed into the rocks, after all.
