#191 "Surviving the System: Strategies and Lessons Learned" Thomas FreeMe... Recorded 4-19-2021
Hey guys, welcome back to my podcast! Today, I have a special guest, Thomas FreeMe, and we're gonna be talking about some heavy stuff. We're gonna be discussing the criminal justice system and how it affects people's lives. We talk about how the system is set up to keep people in rather than rehabilitate them. We also talk about how the system targets certain communities and how that contributes to mass incarceration.
We delve deeper into the topic of how perceptions and societal stereotypes affect how people are treated in the criminal justice system. Thomas shares his own personal story of how he was caught up in the hip hop craze as a teenager and how that led to him being accepted into a certain community, but ultimately being viewed as a mockery.
We discuss the lack of investigating that happens within the system and how it just helps to build bigger cases and put people away for longer periods of time. We also touch on the topic of conspiracy and how it's used to put people away for things they may not have even done. Finally, we talk about the mentalities that people adopt while in the system and how it's often a survival tactic. We also briefly mention Thomas's organization, the Coming Home Coalition, which aims to help men transition back into society after being released from prison.
Overall, it was a heavy but important conversation that I think everyone should hear. Thanks for tuning in!
