We talk a lot on this show about the importance of change when it comes to being a creator. Jim “Caddicarus” Caddick is no stranger to that process, and his ability to adapt has produced some of YouTube’s best gaming content to date. This week, Jim is entering The Create Unknown to shed some light on that process, and how critical change can be.
We start off by looking into the past. We want to know why each of Jim’s videos pre-2020 makes it very clear that they are, in fact, “[OLD].” He tells us about his change of heart when it came to content creation, and we get into just how important a first impression is.
The balance between being funny and being serious can be a tough one to find, and it’s something the Jon Stewarts and the Videogamedunkies of the world wrestle with constantly. Jim lets us in on his secret to finding that balance in his own life, and how caring TOO much can actually get in the way of things.
Jim is renowned for his affinity for the Playstation 1 – something that shines through in most every video he makes. He has a real love for all things PS1, and even the most hated games find a special place in his heart. We dive into some of the most universally hated games, and from Bubsy 3D to A Bug’s Life, Jim’s got a soft spot for them all.
As a creator, making an effective ad read can be tough. You don’t want to come off as a sellout, but at the same time, you’ve got bills to pay. Luckily, Jim’s found the perfect system. We dissect his special ad read character “Spons,” the reception it gets from his fans, and how his sponsors handle it all.
Making a Caddicarus video is hard work. If you don’t believe it, you can see for yourself in Jim’s illuminating special “The Exhausting World of Making a Caddicarus Video” (check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz13cxZNTCo&ab_channel=Caddicarus). We pick his brain about that process, the irony of creating that behind the scenes look, and how that has translated into his highly successful blu-ray project.
We close out the episode with some questions from our patrons who want to know about Jim’s most daunting project, his video game guilty pleasures, beans on toast, and so much more.
Thank you to all our live listeners this week, and a huge shout-out to each and every one of our patrons. You make this show happen. We’ll be back next week with BILLY THE FRIDGE!
