In this episode, Lavetta introduces the life and career of pioneering gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe (American, 1915–1973), who had a significant influence black musicians, on rock and roll, and on challenging gender stereotypes in the music industry. They discuss the racial stereotypes and controversies surrounding Tharpe's music, as well as her success and collaborations with white singing groups. Tharpe's unique style and talent made her a trailblazer in the music industry. Next, Miriam introduces the first female gunnery officer in the United States Navy and the first Asian-American woman to join the U.S. Navy, Susan Ahn Cuddy (American, 1915–2015) and her family's role in Korean independence activism. The hosts discuss her service in the Navy, her fight against Japanese occupation, overcoming discrimination, and her post-Navy life and family.
