When the Golden Rule Is Used to Gaslight You! Dysfunctional Relationships & Narcissistic Abuse
In this episode, Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., LCPC, CADC makes a discovery during a recent psychotherapy session. Ross's client "Anthony" went to a Codependency Anonymous meeting during which the "golden rule" and its importance to codependency recovery was discussed. The more they talked about it the more Ross noticed he felt shamed that he could not always practice this "rule," or when he practiced it, it only made him feel worse. It was then Ross realized that when codependents practice the "Golden Rule," it is often with narcissists who are neither willing nor capable of reciprocating.
Therefore, the fixation on this rule engenders self-doubt, shame, and self-loathing, all of which fit with codependency, or Self-Love Deficit Disorder. As a result, this rule has inherent danger when practice outside of the context it was created or with healthy people. Moreover, when people are gaslit to practice the "Golden Rule" despite being hurt, neglected or abused, then they stay in a perpetual shame-based double bind.
