Hello, I’m James Taylor, a keynote speaker on creativity, innovation, and future trends, and today I’m in Istanbul, Turkey. I would like to talk to you about the concept of creative confidence. First, I would like to express my heartfelt sympathies to the people of this beautiful country who have been through a tough time recently with the earthquakes and the situation in Syria. I truly enjoy coming to Turkey to speak, and the people are lovely. If you can do something to help, such as donating to organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières, please do so.
Recently, I had the chance to speak with Elif Shafak, a successful author of both fiction and non-fiction from Turkey who now resides in London. At an event in Scotland, I asked her a question about creative confidence. When we engage in any type of creative work, we are bound to encounter times when people respond to our work in a way that we don’t necessarily want. Feedback, whether positive or negative, is always valuable. However, sometimes people can be quite aggressive or unkind with their feedback, which can undermine our confidence. So, how do we maintain our confidence and continue to create despite setbacks?
Elif Shafak suggested the idea of having a garden in your heart or mind, a place that is safe from the outside world, where you can retreat with your creative work, experiment, and try new things. This is a place of imagination, a pure space where nothing can touch you. As we grow older, we can lose touch with this sense of wonder, but we need to reclaim it. Having a garden in our hearts where we can retreat to regardless of the outside world is crucial to our creative work.
For me, as a speaker and performer, I encounter different audiences every week, and while most events go well, sometimes they don’t. This can be due to a variety of reasons, including myself or the audience. It can knock my confidence a little. However, I find solace in Elif Shafak’s idea of having a safe place to retreat to, a place of possibility and imagination, where I can experiment and try new things. This way, when the world seems harsh, I can always retreat to my garden.
If you’ve experienced knockbacks in your creative work, I encourage you to create your own garden in your heart. Rebuilding your creative confidence requires a safe place where you can experiment and try new things. My name is James Taylor, and I’m speaking to you from Istanbul, Turkey. Thank you for watching.
