Talking Soundtracks: Interview with Steven C. Smith - The Music of Bernard Herrmann Part 2
In June 2021, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury talked to the four-time Emmy nominated journalist, writer, and producer of over 200 documentaries about music and cinema, Steven C Smith, about his book MUSIC BY MAX STEINER: THE EPIC LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST INFLUENTIAL COMPOSER.
In May 2022, Jason had the opportunity to talk to Steven again about his first book, published in 1991, about another pioneering and influential composer in the history of film music, A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann.
In part one, they talked about how the book came about, and begin to delve into the varied and at times controversial musical career of Bernard Herrmann’ including amongst others, how he started his career in radio, his meeting and collaboration with Orson Welles and the beginnings of his film music career.
During both parts of the show, you will also be hearing plenty of the music of Bernard Herrmann, at times original recordings and at times re-recordings, all of which showcase the musical genius of one of the finest ever composers in the film music field.
Enjoy.
