Candace Hiltz was a 17-year-old daughter, sister and young mother to a baby girl with a debilitaring illness who lived in Canon City, Colorado. She was also a bona fide genius. By the age of 11, she was perfecting calculus equations. By age 17, Candace was already in her third year of college online at Brigham Young University, studying to be a lawyer and Supreme Court Justice, and had already been admitted to Yale Law School. She had her whole life in front of her...until her love of fairness and justice became her downfall.
Candace and her mother, Mary Ann, had witnessed a local police officer, Robert Dodd, doing some shady dealings with the town drug dealer in the summer of 2006. Only a few days after that, Dodd came to their residence to inquire about the whereabouts of Candace's mentally ill brother, James, who was wanted for questioning in a burglary. A fight broke out between Candace and Dodd, she threatened to expose him for what he was, and he left the premises. Two days later, their beloved dog, Jackson, would go missing. Three days after that, Candace was found murdered. This is the Colorado story of a crooked police department, a frame job that ripped apart a close-knit family, and a young girl's life taken too soon.
