This week at The Film Club we’re talking the Baz Luhrmann Jukebox musical epic, Moulin Rouge! The film tells the story of a young English poet Christian who moves to Paris during the height of the Bohemian revolution. Upon arrival Christian meets his Bohemian neighbors who are trying to write a play that can be performed at the Moulin Rouge. The Bohemians come up with an idea to dress Christian up as a successful writer in the hopes that he can convince Harold Zidler the proprietor of the Moulin Rouge to allow Christian to produce the play. This plan includes Christian meeting Satine the star of the Moulin Rouge who aspires to be an actress and also is close to Zidler. On the night of the meeting Zidler and Satine have their own meeting with a Duke who they’re trying to persuade to invest in the Moulin Rouge. On this fateful night Satine meet’s Christian and mistakes him for the Duke. During this mishap Christian and Satine fall in love complicating matters because Zidler promises Satine to the Duke during their investment agreement. Satine and Christian hide their relationship from the Duke during the production of the play in the hopes of running away together after the play premieres. Will Christian and Satine’s plan work? Or is the Duke too powerful? Join us as we dive into the world of the Moulin Rouge!
