Moment of Meditation: City and Tower (Genesis 11:4)
Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” Genesis 11:4
When Cain built the first city, it was to stand against the agrarian roots of his parents and siblings. A way to stand firm, even though God had banished him from their presence.
When Noah’s descendants come together, they want more. They not only want to stand firm. They want to get themselves into Heaven. Inside this city, “a tower with its top in the heavens.” They want to make a way to enter God’s presence to express their opinions.
But if they would have only followed Noah’s faith, they would see the true way to enter God’s presence. Not building a tower. Not climbing a ladder. Falling to your knees in prayer. Opening your heart to God, pouring out your desires. Through faith in the risen Christ, you know that you are heard. He has opened Heaven through His resurrection. So you may enter His presence with thanksgiving through Christ. Amen.
