One thing we often miss with stress urinary incontinence is a focus on the task and timing of our patient's issues.
Often we jump right to voluntary pelvic floor strength. After all, that's what we're taught in our introductory pelvic health courses.
But pelvic health strength isn't really correlated with urinary incontinence.
A patient can have a pelvic floor that tests as weak but not have any symptoms.
A patient can have an pelvic floor testing as strong with massive urinary incontinence problems.
Isolated strength alone tells us almost nothing about how the pelvic floor performs in real-world situations.
So what task are they struggling with? And when does the pelvic floor not meet the demand?
Often this requires standing and dynamic assessment (for more on this, the Not Your Mama's Kegels course is your guide, www.pelvicptrising.com/kegels).

"A Missing Piece" Series
In this series, we're taking a single aspect of a condition or symptom we feel is often overlooked, dismissed or 'just checked'. If you're already doing this consistently, then great! If you're doing it periodically, it might be something to prioritize higher. And if you're not doing it at all, it's another tool in your toolbox.
