"My Value is in How I Look": How the World Around Us Defines Our Value & Controls Our Behavior (Nature Walk)
This episode goes to the heart of how individuals, groups, and societies assign our worth and how we are programmed to believe that our value is derived from external traits or qualities.
Often, as children, we receive recognition and appreciation from others based on a certain role we play (good student, athlete) or action we can be counted on to take (helping around the house) or sometimes a certain physical or personality trait.
When I was a kid, I got the message that my value was based on the fact that I was cute. That set up a belief in me that my value comes from the way I look, and that being pleasing to the eye meant people were going to accept, appreciate, and include me. Rather than believing my worth and value was innate, I've spent decades worrying about what people think and how they perceive me.
Based on what you were valued for as a child, or even as a young adult, you've probably got some faulty programming too. Let's unpack where this comes from, why it's so powerful, and how to get back to the belief that your value comes from the fact that you exist, not from what you do, say, or how you perform.
