Health & Fitness:Mental Health
Chris Hoyer / When That Day Comes / Training for the Fight
This week I had the amazing opportunity to sit down with Chris Hoyer, retired lawman from Arizona, winner of multiple deadly force encounters, and the author of "When That Day Comes, Training for the Fight". Chris and I talk about his experiences, both the good and the bad, and reflect on how we become better and the role each of us plays "When that Day Comes". Chris stated to me the obvious, not all officer involved shootings are gunfights but all gunfights are OIS. We talked about each of them and the emotions they elicited and how he dealt with the aftermath of each. Sit back and give this episode a listen, a great conversation from someone who has been there and back. Until next week, take care of yourself and each other, God Bless, John
BIO
I am a retired Police Officer from Arizona but born and raised in New England. I have been labeled as protector, survivor and advocate for mental, physical and emotional wellness but I believe I am just a regular guy with a fair amount of experience. After twenty-plus years as a street cop, having been faced with the worst horrors imaginable, I have turned my focus to writing and public speaking, helping the law enforcement community prepare for the trauma that comes with the job. I have spoken to thousands, including first responders, mental health professionals and various professional entities, sharing my story in hopes of saving lives. My book is my latest achievement where I discuss tactics, preparation and survival on every level necessary in todays climate. WHEN THAT DAY COMES. TRAINING FOR THE FIGHT. I chose that title based on the necessity to remain vigilant during the hardest times Officers and other first responders face daily. My projected audience is far from limited to this community however. Military folks and every day people facing stressful situations can gain an edge with some simple thoughts facing life's challenges.
With two grown children, one grandchild and having retired honorably, my ultimate dream move was achieved in San Diego where I now work as a full time instructor for the Marine Corps Police Academy.
I am available for discussion any time for assistance or to offer a specialized training presentation where I discuss the details of an Officer ambush and how it impacted a department, multiple families, a community and me personally as well as professionally.
