Have you thought about your birth preferences?
Having gestational diabetes, you might be worried about the big I word…
Induction.
There are typically higher rates of induction among mothers with GD.
This likely has you wondering about how your diagnosis will impact your own birth experience.
If the thought of an induction has you feeling anxious and frustrated about the potential for things to escalate, with additional interventions like an epidural, use of instruments like the vacuum or forceps, and/or a caesarean section (often called, the cascade of interventions), your concerns are really valid.
This scenario does sometimes play out, and can be very stressful.
But, I want you to know something.
Not all inductions are negative.
And if you go into things feeling informed, prepared and empowered, you can have a totally positive experience, regardless of what type of birth you have.
Plus, just like needing to take insulin, an induction doesn't mean you have failed.
And *spoiler* not everyone with GD needs an induction anyway.
In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Beth, a midwife, mum and founder of Powerbirth, a collection of courses that leave you empowered and excited to birth your baby.
Beth's years working as a midwife have taught her that birth looks different for everyone (there is no right or wrong!) but that all positive birth experiences start with preparation.
She helps us break down what exactly an induction is, when they should and shouldn't be used, and what the pros and cons are.
She also helps shed light on whether dates and raspberry leaf tea really do anything.
I think you'll love this chat.
