LSU baseball loses first series of the season vs Auburn Tigers, drops from #1 ranking

LSU baseball was ranked as the #1 team in the country for the first time this season in the preseason polls and they held that spot through seven weeks of conference play. Head coach Jay Johnson's Tigers did not drop a single series the entire season; that is, until this past weekend on the road at Auburn when the other Tigers handed LSU its first series loss of the single and knocking them from the top ranked spot in the country.
The series started off on a high note for Johnson's squad when Friday night starter Paul Skenes had a career night striking out 15 batters in seven innings of work. Skenes earned SEC Pitcher of the Week honors and continues to be the most dominant and consistent arm in pitching coach Wes Johnson's arsenal. However, the pitching unraveled from there. Saturday starter Ty Floyd got off to a fantastic start striking out seven consecutive batters, but after a controversial balk call he failed to regain control of his pitches along with the five subsequent relievers LSU would have to use in a 8-6 loss. Back on Sunday, Christian Little struggled right off the bat. He walked four batters in the first inning and gave up five runs on just one hit. The Tigers were not able to recover and ultimately got run-ruled 12-2 in eight innings.
"Pitchers don't have to be perfect, they just have to be solid," head coach Jay Johnson said of his team's pitching woes. "Outside of Paul, yes, there will be conversations, but that's not abnormal for us to be honest with you. We'll find a way to line it up better."
