Table Talks: Why Spiritual Platitudes can be toxic to Trauma recovery
Send us a Text Message.
I know you've heard them. Those simple phrases that people throw out anytime someone is hurting or in need. Phrases like, "I'll pray for you," or maybe, "just give it to God," or perhaps, "you just have to have more faith." Now, although as a Christian myself, I don't agree with any of those statements in theory, I do disagree as to how they are most often shared. Someone in the church is vulnarable enough, which is risky in itself, to share a struggle, hurt, or need, and then they get these old cliches thrown back at them. Truthfully, when one is going through the pain of trauma, yes, people of faith need God; however, they also need to deal with their bodies, and their hurting minds. Can God heal instantly? As a man of faith, I would say, "yes." But, as a man who has walked the walk and be in the faith most of my life, that isn't the way I have most often seen healing occur, especially traumatic healing.
