Aloha and welcome to the sobriety rocks podcast, I’m your host, Kirk Waterman. Today we talk about Do We Have to Know God to Know Peace?
Charlie Chaplin said, “I am at peace with God. My conflict is with Man.”
When I was a child, I knew both peace, and God. Don’t get me wrong, I had no idea what God was, but I sincerely prayed to it, and was a happy, well-rounded kid, with peace in my heart.
But, as I grew into my teens, more and more negative things happened, and I quit believing in God. Once I became addicted to drugs and alcohol, I lost faith and, the last fragments of peace I had.
Then one day I hit bottom, found the rooms of recovery, and met people with a deep, inner peace, who relied on some God I didn’t believe in. I wanted their peace! So I took their 12 steps, and I too, slowly began to find peace, while I was relying on some power far greater than I.
By the time I finished the steps, I was no longer enslaved by drugs, alcohol, or any other addictions. I had let go of my resentments, faced my fears, altered my poor behavior, cleaned up the mess of my past, had the beginnings of a relationship with some power greater than I, and, found the same peace those around me had.
All these years later, I have no idea who or what God is. But, when I consistently and sincerely do the things I learned in those first months of recovery, I’m filled with an inner peace that’s far better than any I ever got from drugs, alcohol, money, sex, or anything else.
If your heart and mind aren’t full of peace, please join us, and do what we do. You may not know God, but I guarantee, you will know peace.
Today we close with a brief meditation for to bring peace into our heart and mind. So please get comfortable, close your eyes, take a few slow, deep breaths, and join me.
