S8 E1: The Trial of Alex Murdaugh: The Prosecution’s Opening
The story behind this trial has been a media sensation since Alex called police from his cell phone at 10:06 p.m on June 7th, 2021, saying he had discovered the bodies of his wife, Maggie (52), and their younger son, Paul (22), near the dog kennels at the family's hunting lodge, in Islandton, South Carolina. There have been at least two major documentary series and six podcasts, and the New York Times reported that at least 50 million and as many as 150 million people may have watched the trial’s verdict.
Over the coming weeks Jury Duty will present two narratives behind the allegations against Alex Murdaugh as they were offered to the trial’s jury by a prosecution team led by prosecutor Creighton Waters and his team which included South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and state attorneys David Fernandez, John Meaders, and Savannah Goude; and Murdaugh’s defense team comprised of Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin.
We begin that presentation with the trial’s first day and, in this episode, Prosecution’s Opening, the judge’s introductory instructions and the prosecution’s opening statement to the jury.
