She Who Can Not Be Named: A Discussion on Eponymous Branding
Calvin Klein, Kate Spade, Vera Wang - it seems to be best practice within the fashion industry to use eponymous labels, or branding using the name of the designer, owner, or a specific famous person. But eponymous branding creates gray area around how influencers, creators, designers, musicians, and artists can keep legal rights to their *actual identity* when that is what they are selling - their name. They *are* the brand.
This week we welcome Cheval, the Chief Inspiration Officer at She is Cheval and Founder of the A Girl You Might Know Foundation, as she shares a deeply personal and harrowing experience with eponymous branding, and how it led to her no longer being able to use her birth name. Her story is sadly not unique: We’ll discuss how eponymous branding has impacted creators historically, as well as solutions to the crisis this type of branding entails, including how Cheval’s foundation is helping creatives, entrepreneurs, and employees protect themselves from predatory corporate agreements.
