Aloha and welcome to the sobriety rocks podcast, I’m your host, Kirk Waterman. Today we talk about The Price of Recovery
Frank Sonnenberg said “People who receive a free lunch end up paying the price.”
I went the extra mile to achieve great things when I was young. From waking up early to train, to putting in extra time practicing, to staying up all night studying, hard work came naturally to me.
But, once I became addicted to drugs and alcohol, the price I paid to chase the party became far too steep. From family, friends, career, and ambitions to honesty, integrity, humility, and generosity, I pawned everything good I ever had, for a life of addiction.
Then, with nothing left but a broken spirit and a bad reputation, I landed in the rooms of recovery. Here I found people who had once been just like me, but had paid the price, and rebuilt their lives. So, after much debate, I decided to do the work necessary to get my life back.
What I found was that yes, recovery requires a lot of hard work. But none of it is as hard as a life of addiction. I also found that the price to stay here, is far less expensive than the price to get here.
So, if you gave up everything that was good in your life to get here like I did, please, join us and stay. Every day in recovery we do the work and pay the price to make our dreams come true. And it is well worth it!
Today we’ll close with a brief gratitude meditation. So please, get comfortable, close your eyes, take a few slow, deep breaths, and join me.
