Mehmed Ali is dubbed the ‘Father of Modern Egypt’, so who was he? And how did he rise through the ranks from soldier to Pasha? Mikey sits down with Professor Khaled Fahmy to discuss this enigmatic figure that shaped and formed Egypt into the nation-state we know today. In Part 2, Professor Fahmy walks us through Mehmed Ali's rule, death, and legacy.
Professor Khaled Fahmy is a historian of the Modern Middle East with an emphasis on the social and cultural history of 19th century Egypt.
His particular areas of interest are military, medical, legal and social history of the Modern Middle East. And through his work, he explores conscription, vaccination and legal torture as mechanisms through which the modern state of Egypt was established. He has written a number of books including ‘All the Pasha’s Men: Mehmed Ali, His Army, and the Making of Modern Egypt’, ‘Mehmed Ali: From Ottoman Governor to Ruler of Egypt’, ‘Al-Jasa wa-l’Hadatha (The Body and Modernity., and most recently, ‘In Quest of Justice: Islamic Law and Forensic Medicine in Modern Egypt' which won the Social History Society Book Prize.
Professor Fahmy has taught at Princeton, NYU, Columbia, Harvard and Cambridge Universities, and is currently the Edward Keller Professor of North African and the Middle Eastern History at Tufts University.
